[Comments] Athens, Capital city of Greece, is a fascinating city. I stayed right opposite the Parthenon in a beautiful Hotel. The main shoppping Plaza was 10 minutes walk across the road, so that meant that I could wander to the shops when I chose. The first day I went on a tour to the Parthenon. The tour guide had recently written a book about the ruins she was taking tourists through, so that was very interesting. We walked right to the top of the Parthenon along a steep stone path. From there you can see all of Athens. There were many renovations being done at the time, for the Olympic Games the following year. It was a very beautiful walk and the photos are here in this album. The next tour was a day Cruise to three Islands. This was wonderful and I really enjoyed the experience. I went on a Cruise Boat which was full of Japanese tourists. I shared a meal table with a french couple and a chinese teacher, and we were the only four not with the Japanese, and only the chinese teacher spoke English. I found the Islands absolutely amazing. Seeing and walking amongst ruins that have been there for centuries was a very moving experience. The temples were very beautiful, even in ruins, and the guides were very careful with us. My new Chinese friend translated some of the information for me. I also did a tour of Athens by bus, and saw the Olympic Stadium and Post Office and Public Buildings. It was wonderful seeing classical bronze statues everywhere. Photographing through a bus window was not the easiest way to go, but I managed to get some great photographs. The food of Greece is fresh and tasty. The restaurants are friendly and open, and everywhere I went people wanted to chat with me and I really enjoyed it all. The nightlife cafes are wonderful..cute bistros full of great food and many with live music. Greece and the Greek Islands are very beautiful and I am looking forward to returning someday and spending more time in Greece. I tried to get a teaching job there, but I was offered $6 an hour, with the chance of working out of hours for more income. This fascinated me as the donkey on hire rated $15 for 20 minutes, making him better paid than a profesional teacher. The scenery in the islands is spectacular and dramatic and also very peaceful. The houses along the cliff tops are breathtakingly beautiful, and Greece has to be one of the most wonderful places I have ever been to. Marguerite 2005 Ladymaggic http://M-carstairs.com/travel
