[Comments] I flew to Christchurch and then drove to Franz Josef Glacier, a trip of 684 kms which took about 6 hours. The scenery aove Arthurs Pass was absolutely magical. It rained the entire trip so photography was difficult and often in spitting rain. There was snow on Mt Cooke and the steep winding drive was wonderful. We made many stops for photographs. There was beauty and a change in scenery every few miles...New Zealand has a surfeit of beauty. Only an artist can really keep feeding the system with so much beauty. The flowers were everywhere, especially the lupins in Westland. They were mainly purple and there were fields of purple with rocky glacier streams of cold grey. Rather stunning actually. Visited Franz Josef where we stayed the night at the YHA, and then walked this amazing track to view Fox Glacier using a towel to protect myself and the camera from the rain. Hokitikia was wonderful..would have liked more time there. Haasts was rugged coast and Wanaka was a total delight. I never expected the beauty of the Lake. Stayed at the caravan park there as I was jet lagged. The bungy jump at Queenstown and the Shotover Gorge are well worth a visit..some dramatic scenery for photos and watching the young jumpers was also interesting. Two japanese boys aged about 12 jumped as well as a young girl. Drove up to Coronet Peak in the rain, which was a bit scary in the small car. The view from the top is well worth the sneaking up the unmade road. The valley below is stunning and the lupins now changed to golds and gorse was plentiful. From Invercargill a day trip to the Catlins resulted in seals at the lighthouse, a huge waterfall and being entranced by the windshaped trees, and name, of Cannibal Bay...well worth the detour. The Invercargill Museum has a Tautarium where you can see 100 year old tautaras...from the dinosaur family. Well worth a visit and as there was a bit of sunshine this day, got heaps of photos of the old girl. South Island is well worth a drive. It took 3 nights to get to Invercargill..total 1200 kms...and Christchurch is 580kms from Invercargill.A short drive to Riverton is worth doing and you must get to Bluff and Stewart island, which I missed this time because of the weather. Flying back I saw the creamy peaks of MT Cooke below. For a feast of beauty in a short dose you cannot get better than New Zealand..the place God created after he had mastered the skill of creation. This trip took 4 days to drive from Christchurch to Invercargill. 19 Dec to 23rd Dec 2004 Marguerite Carstairs http://Community.webshots.com/user/ladymaggic
