[Comments] I Travelled by plane from Perth to Broome. Below lay the red desert and the salt lakes. Stayed overnight at Roebuck Bay..the mangroves are below as the plane landed in Broome. The next place was Port Hedland which was 684 kms with one stop..a roadhouse called Sandfire Bay. We left about 10 in the Britz Motor Van and did not get to Port Hedland until about 5. It was a full 6 hours driving along a fascinating red desert road. I did not find this part of the trip boring..in fact I found the colors exciting and vibrant. It wasn't until I saw the photos that I realised how little there was that changed on the road. The weather was in the late 40's..48 degrees when we got to Port Hedland. The air conditioner did not work too well and until we bought an ice chest and ice and tall glasses and cordial, the travelling was difficult as we were sweating as well. The cold drinks did help ease some of the huge heat. The Gorge was Shothole Gorge on the road to Exmouth. I found the trip exciting as I love the desert colors and the desert lifestyle. We crossed the 23rd lateral..The Gulf of Carpentaria. I recommend very light clothing and lots of icy drinks if you are planning to do the trip...and some music. There was no CD player in the van we had. A spray bottle of cool water would also be a luxury and lots of sunprotection. I got very brown and tanned whilst travelling whereas my travel partner got red and redder. North West Australia is all desert. We only passed one river ith water in it. That was the Sherlock River. Every other river bed was stone dry. Most of the scenery was also totally flat. One tended to get excited over any small ridge of rock or any mound. The roadsides were full of red termite mounds and mull mulla..the grassy purple flower that was the only break in a blending scenery. The entire trip took 6 days..this first part was 6 hours.
